The festival season can be hard to navigate, so below I’ve listed the shows that people I trust have recommended, I’ve seen and loved, or the buzz about them is good enough to put them on the list. I’ll keep my ear to the ground and up-date again regularly. Of course there are lots of shows that I hope are brilliant, and will up-date the list as word gets out.
I have got 27 shows at the Adelaide College of the Arts, I expect they will all be fabulous, but until they’ve had a run, I’m just highlighting a few…..and by the way, all the cash from tickets goes back to the artists
In alphabetical order….
Bunny (Roarawar Feartata) http://tiny.cc/llsdf [winner Innovation in Theatre at Melbourne Fringe last year]
Dr Brown Befrdfgth http://tiny.cc/jl3rq [not for everyone – very bizarre – but I laughed until I cried last year]
Executive Stress/Corporate Retreat (Applespiel) http://tiny.cc/8ithw [high energy young group from Melbourne]
Hard to be a God ADELAIDE FESTIVAL http://tiny.cc/27x2w [extreme theatre – Hungarian company – set in the old Clipsal site]
Raoul (La compangie du Hanneton) ADELAIDE FESTIVAL http://tiny.cc/luqn7 [Paul Grabowsky says convincingly that the artist James Thiérrée is absolutely bloody amazing and must be seen]
Seven kilometres north-east (version 1.0) http://tiny.cc/43yjl [version 1.0 from Sydney are legendary – this show will resonate with those that live near the New Quay Port]
Sons & Mothers (No Strings Attached) http://tiny.cc/8jv71 [great local team working on this show]
Swamp Juice (Bunk Puppets) http://tiny.cc/4uddc [back again – but selling out each year – shadow puppetry extraordinaire – beautiful stuff]
The Disappearances Project (version 1.0) http://tiny.cc/q31rh [that version 1.0 lot again!]
The Terrible Infants http://tiny.cc/3dn6e [I saw this in Edinburgh – Five star show there. Beautiful, rich French work]
The Year of Magical Wanking (THISISPOPBABY) http://tiny.cc/2f4gn [This show is entirely in verse and has audiences enthralled with it’s Irish beauty]
This Is It (Team Mess) http://tiny.cc/1d6eu [very short run - press conference for a non-existent new movie. APAM selection]
Wee Andy (Tumult in the Clouds) http://tiny.cc/dgzh4 [winner of the Holden Street Edinburgh award and Martha Lott has been on the money for the past three years - great shows]
XXXO (supported by Ontroerend Goed) http://tiny.cc/1di65 [Highly anticipated new show. Two young Belgian actors cry for you every night. They get to the ‘ultimate cry’ by using you tube clips and material that gets them super emotional.]
MORE TO COME SOON….

Thanks to those who did attempt to follow my blog and apologies for letting it dwindle in the third week. Hot hot shows had sold and the vibe on newies wasn’t convincing. So, I let it slip.
Delighted that Tuxedo Cat won BEST VENUE at the Fringe Awards. Highly deserved.
Fascinating being on the outside of the organisation and in the West End. I’ve got no doubt that Higher Ground, Adelaide College of the Arts and Guy Masterson should work together to present a hub of international theatre. It is a real mash of themes and audiences and ideas down there and we WILL sort it out.
I’m delighted that 2011 Fringe is up on sales. Congratulations to all.

Cantina [no link - no point] - every show for the whole season is sold out! What did I tell you. Congrats to Scott Maidment and the team, and nice work if you have a ticket. There will be a black market for them in week 3 – stay posted for link
No Hello At the Bakehouse only until 5 March. Good reports. Lots of local Adelaide people creating beautiful things together.
My Hot Tips for Week 1 still stand.
TalkFringe I’ve always been a big fan of TalkFringe.com but having spent a good wee while just now, I’m not able to summarise my findings for good navigation tips for you. It would be good to see a PhD on it all….fascinating democratic stuff, but good navigation…hmmmmm….I’ll come back to you on that. And this isn’t a dig at the BankSA, who run it ( they ‘get’ the Fringe and want good creative things for South Aust).
Between now and the weekend, I’ll do a sweeping poll of venue managers and all those I know and trust to provide new up-dates and I’ll post again before Saturde.

The following list of shows are recommended by at least 2 people whose opinion I favour. This list will be added to as the days roll on.
Cantina is emerging as the definite success of week one. Dozens of reports that it is finer than La Clique and the must see show.
CABARET
A Modest Exhibit featuring Adelaide’s own Charlie Saunders.
Christa Hughes presents: beer drinking woman…an intoxicating cabaret superb talent.
The Wau Wau sisters are naked as they day they were born again! regardless of the trickery of nakeness, the Wau Wau’s are at the peak of their physical performance
CIRCUS
Cantina ready the 5 show success of the GUD.
This is what we do for a living. Tumble Circus.funny, clever and sublimely talented
Tom Tom Club. Huge success around the world. Still going strong.
COMEDY
Stevl Shefn and his translator fatima. Bizarre genius. I adored this show.
Marcel Lucont Etc – a chat show – new guests each night. Marcel challenges guests to a staring competition and is un-matched.
Lots more comedy tips coming soon
DANCE
The Teahouse beautiful graduates from ACARts – first show. Worth a look….only two shows
PUPPETRY
Swamp Juice by shadow puppeter Jeff Achtem the hit of the Puppet Palace.
Most of the shows at the puppet palace are top draw. I will report back on what not to see – but at this stage can recommend the lot.
THEATRE
Nothing is really difficult. Niets is echt Moeilljk Hit of the Dutch Festivals. Sublime.
Bound Reports of a ‘very very lovely piece of theatre’.
Shylock Guy Masterson is a master – Shylock is a graceful romp through Shylock’s history. Fancy Shakesphere writing in a Jew without having met one…and we owe much to his portral for decades of predijce.
You’re not like the other girls Chrissy – reports of a well written, well delivered piece of theatre
Hello and welcome to a new blog attempting to provide a personal perspective on festivals / art and cool things in Adelaide and beyond.
Being new to blogging it will take me a few days to learn the basics….so this is a test post.
Enjoy…
